He did it! After setting himself a seemingly near-impossible goal earlier this year, forty-four year old Greg Nelson, Councillor for the Town of Milton, has successfully completed a record twelve jumps in one day from the 728-foot Verzasca Dam in Switzerland. The feat, accomplished on September 26, 2009...

Move over, James Bond.

A Milton councillor not only bungee-jumped off a 70-storey dam in Switzerland -- he did it 11 times more than the 007 British secret agent in the 1995 hit movie Goldeneye.

And with his goal of raising money for three local charities, Greg Nelson, 44, made no secret of his plan to pitch himself repeatedly from the 240-metre tall Verzasca Dam last Saturday.

Bruised, battered, exhausted -- but "exhilirated" -- Nelson said his first sight of one of the world's tallest dams "was beyond intimidating."

"It would fill four or five city blocks and it's over 70 storeys tall," he said yesterday.

"The sensations of that first jump were indescribable," said Nelson, who is to return to Canada tomorrow...

Toronto Sun - Jump for charitee-eeeee!

August 3, 2009

Ian Robertson, SUN MEDIA

MILTON -- Town Councillor Greg Nelson is a living example of someone who has survived the ups and downs of public life -- literally.

After a 12-year hiatus, the two-year councillor resumed bungee-jumping in May.

Instead of just seeking thrills, he threw himself into the globally popular sport to raise funds for local charities through his Gravity Gives project, which boasts 800 members.

At 44, Nelson, who manages a Georgetown automotive services business, recruited a trainer and a naturopathic doctor to test, coach and monitor his progress.

Bungee-jumping had its ups and downs in the 1990s, including a few well-publicized injuries and several deaths, which Nelson attributes mostly to poor training and equipment....

The Toronto Star - The fall and rise and fall and rise of a charitable Milton councillor

Greg Nelson is a rare politician indeed. Tell him to take a flying leap and he'll actually do it.

Fresh from setting a record by making 16 61-metre bungee jumps in one day at North America's tallest commercial jump site in Wakefield, Que., the Milton town councillor has his sights set on an even higher record in Switzerland.

He hopes to break the record of 11 jumps in a day at the 220-metre Verzasca Dam in September, all in aid of three Milton-area charities....

National Post - Jumping for joy ... and charity

Friday, April 24, 2009

Matthew Coutts, National Post

A Milton town councillor plans to launch himself off the 220-metre Verzasca Dam in Switzerland a total of eight times in one day, to set a bungee-jumping record and raise money for local charities. On Sept. 26, Greg Nelson, who runs an auto body shop by day and acts as a councillor for the Halton Region city by night, is set to return to his extreme pastime after 12 years in retirement. The Post's Matthew Coutts asks what makes a middle-age politician jump.

Q You're described as a jack-of-many-trades. Are you a town councillor who bungee jumps, or the other way around?

A I think it's a town councillor who bungee jumps. I haven't done one in 12 years, So I'm a councillor that, I think, people weren't aware that it was something I do...      read more>

Milton Canadian Champion - Town councillor to take the plunge this fall

May 22, 2009

Stephanie Hounsell, Canadian Champion Staff

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… a Milton politician throwing himself off a 220-metre dam?
Yep, on September 26, Ward 2 Councillor Greg Nelson will take the plunge, bungee jumping off Switzerland’s Verzasca Dam — one of the highest in the world — to raise money for three local charities.

His goal? To break the record for most jumps in one day at the dam; and until then, to ensure word of his endeavour spreads like wildfire to encourage financial support as well as awareness for The Deck Milton youth centre, Halton Women’s Place shelter and the Halton Learning Foundation.

It’s called the Gravity Gives Project, and this is certainly a side of Nelson with which few Miltonians are familiar.

His is no small feat, to be sure. Nelson will reach a speed of 140 km/h...
